FAQ’s about Shakespeare

Prefatory Note

The Shakespeare scholar Wolfgang Clemen once said that Shakespeare’s work is too complex to be discussed in a short amount of time. Therefore it is obvious that our answers in the FAQ-section bring up even more questions. Many questions still cannot be answered but this impossibility is part of what makes Shakespeare so highly fascinating. Numerous handbooks offer a well-grounded introduction to Shakespeare’s life, work and to Shakespeare scholarship.

For readers of German-speaking countries the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft recommends Shakespeare-Handbuch: Die Zeit – Der Mensch – Das Werk – Die Nachwelt. Edited by Ina Schabert. 4th edition. Stuttgart: Kröner, 2000 (ISBN 3-520-38604-6).
